Central Methodist College
To Host Annual Band Day

FAYETTE, Mo. --  More than 25 Missouri high school bands participate in the 10th annual band day to be held Saturday (Oct. 20) at Central Methodist College. The event will get underway at 9 a.m. with a Fayette followed by field competition from 10:15 a.m. to  1 p.m

Approximately 2,000 students are expected to be on hand along with more than 100 parents and chaperons. An estimated 60 busses will be used to transport the various bands to the CMC campus. This year's band day is expected to be the largest in the history of the college.

Keith House, director of bands at CME, is in charge of the event.

Band Day at Central Methodist started in 1964 with nine bands participating and until 1971 was held in conjunction with CMC's homecoming. With additional bands taking part each year, the logistical and scheduling problems involved with having both events at the same time had become impossible to handle.

Following the field competition, the college will provide lunch for the high school students and their chaperons. The visitors will then be guests of CMC for the 2 p.m. football game which will see the Central Eagles pitted against the William
Jewell Cardinals.

Band Day 1

Trophies will be presented at 1:50 p.m., just prior to the kickoff. The band with the most points will perform at the halftime show along with the CMC Marching Eagles.

As in the past, trophies will be given in both street marching and field performance. Bands will compete in categories as determined by school enrollment - A (small), AA (medium), AAA (large), and AAAA (extra-large).

Three trophies in each category will be given in the street marching, with the groups to be judged on performance of music, column movement, and block-band appearance. Trophies also will be awarded for the field competition with judging to be based on marching and precision, shows, and music.

Also to be awarded will be two special trophies; one for the best drum major and another to the group presenting the best “band front." The band front is interpreted to mean the flag bearers, drum majors, twirlers, pom-pon corps and other who march ahead of a band.

The band with the largest total points from both the street marching and the field competition will be awarded the grand champion trophy which can be retired after it has been won three" consecutive times. Park Hill High School from Kansas City retired the grand champion trophy in 1971. A new one was begun last fall and was again won by Park Hill. '"In short," remarked House, “Park Hill is the school the others will be trying to beat."
