That bless thy name, Our Alma Mater.

Through years of toil and comradeship together,
’mid friendly scenes and spirited endeavor,
Fearless and free-
With loyalty we’ve lived for thee,
Central for thee, Our Alma Mater.

Unto these last of college days together,
With mingled thought of distant days that sever,
Strong in thy faith-
Our hope and heart we pledge to thee,
Central for thee, Our Alma Mater.

Dr. Hix: Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars.
The People: DOTH NOT WISDOM CRY? ANDUNDERSTANDING PUT FORTH HER VOICE?

She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.

SHE CRIETH AT THE GATES, AT THE ENTRY OF THE CITY, AT THE COMING IN THE DOORS.

Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.

O YE SIMPLE, UNDERSTAND WISDOM: AND YE FOOLS, BE YE OF AN UNDERSTANDING HEART.

Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.

FOR MY MOUTH SHALL SPEAK TRUTH: AND WICKEDNESS IS AN ABOMINATION TO MY LIPS.

Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice of gold.

FOR WISDOM IS BETTER THAN RUBIES: AND ALL THE THINGS THAT MAY BE DESIRED ARE NOT TO BE COMPARED TO IT.

But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?

BEHOLD, THE FEAR OF THE LORD, THAT IS WISDOM: AND TO DEPART FROM EVIL IS UNDERSTANDING.

SAMUEL LEE STEDMAN

The largest benefactor in the history of Central Methodist College Samuel Lee Stedman was born in Sedalia, Mo., where he graduated from Smith-Cotton High School. After completing his secondary education he entered Central Methodist College earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1935 with his major field of study in economics. The late Dean E. P. Puckett, of Central, recognized Stedman’s ap- titude for business and recom- mended that he continue his studies in the Graduate School of Business at Harvard University where he was awarded the Master of Arts degree in Business Administration in 1937.

After graduation from Harvard he began his business career with J. S. Bache and Co., where he specialized in analyzing securities and investment portfolios for clients. During this time he pursued the study of law in the evening classes of the City College of New York and attained the degree of Bachelor of Law in 1940.

After a period of service in the United States Army he returned to J. S. Bache and Co., and in January of 1952 he became associated with the firm in which he later became a partner, the Carl M. Loeb, Rhoades and Co, of New York City.

Becoming one of the most powerful young men of Wall Street, Samuel Stedman never forgot the school that had given him his background for success. Throughout the years he was one of the colleges most loyal alumni, giving both of his time and his material resources.

In 1952 Dr. Stedman was honored by Central as a distinguished alumnus and in 1960 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. He was elected a member of the Board of Curators in 1959, and frequently made trips back to the campus to discuss college matters.

It was because of his wish to repay his alma mater for his education and to show his appreciation for the success he had achieved in the business world that Stedman gave one million dollars to Central Methodist College to build a new science building on the campus. It had been his desire that the name of the donor be kept anonymous but before the final financial transaction for the building had been completed, Dr. Stedman died unexpectedly at the early age of 44. However, his will carried out his plans for the college to have this building.

By arrangement with the widow of Mr. Stedman and by vote of the Central Methodist College Board of Curators, it was decided that the new science building be designated as the Stedman Hall of Science.

The unselfishness of one man in sharing his fortune with others will make it possible for thousands of young men and women to have the opportunity to build a better foundation for their own success. It is to the memory of Samuel Lee Stedman that we dedicate this building.
