Board of Curators
Central Methodist College

Gentlemen:

I have just returned from a visit with Samuel Lee Stedman, 465 Park Avenue, New York 22, N. Y., who, as you know, has been quite ill. He is fighting a difficult battle with a malignancy, and is under daily treatment. He is in wonderful spirits and is making a very determined fight which he feels he will win. He makes believers out of all who are associated with him.

It is with real pleasure that I inform you that he has pledged Central Methodist College a new Science Build- ing. He plans to make the contribution over a five year period totaling about $1,000,000. In order to help us get it under way at once, he will put up such collateral as is necessary in connection with the financing, and in the event that he does not live, has already covered us in his will.

The architect and contractor have been over the
campus with me studying various locations for the type of building required for a modern science structure. In a short time, I will have full information regarding Ehe proposals, site, sketches, etc., for approval by the
Board.

In the meantime, I think it would be most appropriate if members of the Board express their personal appreciation’ to Sam for this wonderful gift. Insofar as I can determine, we have never had an individual gift of such magnitude or long range significance in the history of the college. At present, he is insistent that the building not be named for him, but called Curators Hall or some such name. In spite of his modesty, I think it most important that we find some way to adequately recognize such a benefactor.
With high regard.

Sincerely,
Ralph L. Woodward
